Shop Text – Attention Grabbers

AJ Jakubowska from Etsy shop “Nighbluey” submitted a great tip to our HandmadeMarketing.org team.  Have a look at the Nighbluey shop here.

Since being on Etsy.com, Nighbluey has been an Etsy success.  AJ has received positive feedback from 140 buyers and has already sold 23 items to date since the first of the year!

AJ shared ideas for grabbing a potential buyer’s attention that we think are amazing:

Sellers have two initial chances to grab a potential buyer’s attention,” explains AJ.  “The first is visual, through eye-catching photos.  The second is through their title for and description of each item.

Do not  miss your chance to grab your potential buyer’s attention right at the outset.  Reel them in by writing about your item with passion, but also by supplying the potential buyer with sufficient information to allow them to make THE decision: to buy or not to buy!”

AJ1801AJ She Put the Lime in the CoconutRemember,” AJ continues, “some buyers are just cruising through and might have seen your item in a photo on the new Etsy listing feature.  Others are very focused in their search and might have entered specific wording which brought your specific item to their attention.”

AJ recommends catering to both categories of potential buyers.  “Hold their attention by making them interested in going further, into your shop, into your description. Provide all the technical information they require.  For example (and this depends on the specific item you are selling) what is it, how was it made, what are the dimensions, materials, special care instructions.”

A little sense of humour does not hurt,” says AJ.  “But remember, you are in the business of selling. Your potential buyer should not need to wade through paragraphs and paragraphs to get to what they really need to make their decision, you know, to buy or not to buy.

Thanks for the information AJ!

All handmade sellers could benefit by taking a look at the traffic of visitors coming to their shop.  Spot checking your shop to make sure you are grabbing the potential buyer’s attention.  One way to do this is by reviewing your Google Analytics reports and look at your bounce rate.  What are you missing?  Why are potential buyers leaving your online shop?  How could you sharpen your text to catch a buyer’s attention?  Attention grabbing text may help the bounce rate on your site.

What tips do you have for writing attention grabbing text?  What do you attribute to decreasing your site’s bounce rate?  Do you have any suggestions for marketing handmade stores online?

We want to hear your ideas!  Share your tips for selling handmade goods.  If our editors like your ideas, we will feature your handmade shop in a HandmadeMarketing.org article.

My attention grabbing text is usually inspired from actually having the piece in front of me as I write. I always try to convey the “feel” and if I’m having writers block…I bring in the nine year old! Some of my best descriptions rolled from the mouth of babes. Thanks for the post. Always an enjoyable read.
