I will first address the experiences that were not so positive. First, two days is not enough time to have a giveaway and expect people to flock to your blog. Some people don't even read their emails everyday, or updates, and that is for facebook, twitter, and myspace. I agree with the above. It's not a giveaway if it's a free item with a purchase. I automatically do that when someone purchases from my shop anyway. Also if you feel like you shouldn't have to giveaway ANYTHING from your shop to drive people in, think again! Let me just share my own experience. Not only am I involved in handmade, I am involved in fashion period, that includes top brands and every year I attend the famous MAGIC Fashion and Trade Convention in Las Vegas. Let me tell about Christian Audigier and his showroom. It was amazing!!!! Because I love creating my own trends I ran from the Christian Audigier brand as fast as I could. But when I went to his show, he GAVE FREE t-shirts, AND handbags, AND hats, AND fragrance! Are your kidding me. I love HIM! lol. As I soaked in all of his brands I fell in love more and more, because I could see that his lifestyle brand was not JUST about the dollar. This man is a giver and people attach themselves to givers. I mean, not only did he take of the whole top floor of Ceasar's Palace, but he had tea, coffee, water, orange juice, and lemonade, couches, a runway, love seats, everything! I wanted t stay ALL day and lounge around, get glitter tatoos, which I fell in love with. This man was creating an experience and this is what people like. He did what none of the other showrooms did. Business is about giving and creating relationships. If you can't connect with your target consumer emotionally and beautifully, especially when it comes to jewelry, then you risk growth opportunity. I really believe that. It is not to say that there aren't the ones that will buy and not care about making a relationship with a brand. There are for sure. Would I pay the price for Christian Audigier now? Yes I WOULD!! lol. Because he made me feel so special in his environment. I am not just buying a t-shirt, I am buying art. The T's are so soft that I can sleep in them, and he cuts no corners at all in his materials and supplies. I would pay without a doubt. That one experience change my whole view point about who he was. This is exactly what giving will do your business. It allows people to come into your world (blog) and connect with you. When people connect they buy. It's happened to me over and over. I just received a sale from a guy I met vending. He did buy then, but I gave him one of my music Cd's and he was so grateful. I gave a lot of Cd's out which I use for my promotional material with my shop address on it. When they are listening to my song, hopefully they are thiking about me! Giveaways are great because you can see by how many people that enter, what items are popular in your shop. Okay that's all. Did mean for this to be too long.

I am going to throw my had in the giveaway ring and see what happens. This is not a gift with purchase, I guess it is more of a contest really. I just posted this morning and already have increased traffic to my shop. Here is a link to the contest http://cinderelish.blogspot.com/2009/04/earth-day-giveaway.html

I think the give a ways are a fun way to promote others. I am doing my first one and I will continue to do them. I am giving away other peoples items. I hope it increases traffic to both shops and my blog. My blog is a bit lonely. Then again I do not blog as often as I used to. Give a ways are personal I guess but I have found a lot of people interested in them.

I think it depends on the give-away. Anything that's free with purchase, isn't really a give-away in the way that the general public seems to think of them. It has to truly be free.

I know for a fact we've gotten direct sales from having give-aways, because the winners have become customers. So even if we only wind up with 1 new customer from a give-away, its worth it, because they obviously feel we're good enough to come back to, which means, on some level, we're good enough for them to talk about, which could in turn bring in more customers - and on down the line.

The big thing, is you have to make it enticing in some way for your readers, get them involved in the excitement, or its going to flop. If you don't have enough readers of your own blog to make it worthwhile, sponsor a give-away on another *well known* give-away blog. Then they do all the work of the give-away, you get the traffic, and when the give-away is over, you mail the package out to the winner. Its the best of both worlds that way.
