PageRank – SEO Practices Pay Off

Have you ever wondered about “PageRank”?  With the buzz word flying around the online handmade community, HandmadeMarketing.org wanted to share the scoop with our readers.

The term “PageRank” is actually a trademark of Google and is essentially a link analysis algorithm.  PageRank was named after Larry Page of Google and is used by the company’s Internet search engine.

Knowing a website’s “PageRank” will tell you a lot about the site.  PageRank is meant to measure a site’s relative importance compared to other sites within a particular set.

Still a little lost?  Here’s is Google’s explaination on their site:

PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves “important” weigh more heavily and help to make other pages “important”,” the site explains.
