Face It – Join Facebook Today

Everyone is a little nervous when they join Facebook.com, but face the facts!  Facebook overtook MySpace.com in August 2008 by attracting an astounding 132.1 million visitors in June 2008.

Facebook is fresh, clean, and hip – sound familiar?  Promoting your handmade shop on Facebook.com is a perfect match!

Here is an Etsy seller’s experience with Facebook submitted by HandmadeMarketing.org reader Jill:

Create a facebook fan page!“, writes Julia.  “This is very easy to do. Everytime I update my Etsy shop I also post pictures and comments on my store’s facebook fan page. I always receive immediate comments from people and for the most part, each update has generated a sale for me.“  Julia’s Etsy shop (check it out here) has been seeing results off of Facebook.

If you already have a personal Facebook page, why not add one to promote selling handmade?

If you are already a member of Facebook, start a fan page for your handmade shop!” said Etsy seller Glynis Ratcliffe, from Etsy shop IntuitiveJewellery.  “With the new Facebook layout and news feed, it’s possible to keep your page at the top of the home page of anyone who is a fan of your shop, if you upload new photos daily. I have received several sales through my Facebook fan page, from friends who don’t want to buy through Etsy, but are interested in my products.”  Thanks for sharing your experience Glynis!

What’s the reason NOT to join Facebook.com?  Creating a business page takes less than 15 minutes.  Plus chances are if you ask around, most people you know are probably already on Facebook – friends, family, neighbors, co-workers… even your pastor!

Ok, that was going a little too far.  The point is, handmade sellers need to face it – join Facebook!

Hi! I have a Facebook fan page and have had great success promoting my Etsy page. Once my friends “fan” the page I can comment on their pages which increases my awareness with their friends.

I can send fans updates from the page, upload pictures of my inventory, add events I’ll be at and post the link to my profile every once in a while to solicit more fans.

I set up Google analytics to track hits to my Etsy page. Right now, Facebook is my second most popular source for referral visits.

It’s an easy way to connect to friends and new fans! -Becka
