Gift Givers – Post Items Geared Towards Giving

Etsy.com shoppers love the website – the idea of “buying, selling and living handmade” and the connection to Etsy sellers all over the world.

It would no surprise to Etsy sellers that shoppers will often give Etsy items to friends, neighbors, family members, co-workers (you get the idea…)

Why not capitalize on the use of Etsy to purchase gifts?  Our HandmadeMarketing.org team finds that Etsy sellers that provide a wide range of pricing tend to get that “gift market”.  After all, a buyer may want to buy a $100 painting for themselves, but may want a smaller $25 piece of art to give as a gift.

Take a quick “gift” inventory of your shop:

  1. How many items in your Etsy shop would you consider to be “gifts”?
  2. How many items have tags targeted towards gift givers?
  3. Do you offer any interesting gift giving incentives?

Of course, not all items in your shop need to be geared towards gift giving, but throwing a few in may help you reach a new market of shoppers.  Utilizing gift-oriented tags will help connect you with the potential buyer.

As far as interesting gift giving incentives, here are a couple suggestions from our team:

First, if your items are relatively low cost and small, consider promoting a “gift for a friend, gift for you” approach.  For example, say a buyer purchases a bracelet.  Consider doing a “2 for the price of one” but mention it’s geared towards gift giving.  Here is some language our team has seen regarding this type of promotion:

“Lovely bird-themed thank you cards with customized initial.  Item comes with two sets of beautiful cards… one for a friend, and one for you!”

Second, a simple way to become a “gift-friendly” shop is to include cards or great packaging with your items.  No need to over-haul your current packaging, just spruce it up with a ribbon or two and add a cute card.  For example, if you sell pajama sets, you could use language like this:

“Cozy pajama set in four colors (red, blue, yellow, and pink).  Set comes with coordinating gift card and packaging.”

Not sure if your Etsy items fit into the “gift giving” format?  Try it out with a couple new items and see how it goes!
