As a 12 year veteran eBay seller who is in books on how to do it well, I can easily spot the pros and cons of each site. In short, eBay is good, loads of traffic, but its customers place almost no value on anything hand made and in fact seem to look down upon those items as though they were teenagers presented with hand me down clothes! New and inexpensive are key words here, that or very unique, they are not dumb! They are seeking a fantastic bargain as one might find at a garage sale, and yet, are very picky in the process... after all, they have lots to choose from.
Etsy does not have the flea market atmosphere one finds on eBay and hand crafted or hand made are well respected and valued. You will get more for good vintage (not junk!) and hand made items here, provided they are of quality.
Etsy shoppers are smart and know the difference between stuff you made and artistically hand crafted items. In your heart, so do you! So don't expect to crank out allot of, well.... stuff, and have it sell. Give your best and only what you would actually buy yourself and you'll do fine here.

You forget the essential point of Ebay vs Etsy.
On Etsy the seller is proud of his/hers business, and puts up a nice profile, shows where she/he lives and works, and takes a large amount of time to make nice pictures and create a real life shop experience. The seller really has a virtual store, with customers coming back and getting a bit of the feel contact with the seller.

On Ebay you buy from 348xdonkey whose only goal is to stay at 100% feedback. The seller can choose to block questions from potential buyers. The seller lists his stuff with the crappiest telephone pictures, down-sampled to thumbnail size, and adds 2 pages of hefty formatted Comic Sans crap to it with mostly reasons for no refund and things to remind before giving negative feedback.

I found that I didn't have much luck selling my handmade items on ebay. That was quite a few yrs ago tho. I have toyed with the idea of trying it again, just to get my items in a wider marketplace, but the fees are really holding me back right now. I've been selling on etsy for three yrs and I do like it--it's much more affordable than ebay and your products are displayed better. Not to mention I like that you get your own store and it's not extra like ebay.

I also sell my handmade items along with other items on eCrater. They have a great community there and it's absolutely free--unlimited listings. I haven't sold much there but it's relatively new too. Being a free selling/buying site, you're not losing any money when something doesn't sell.

I loathe Ebay! They contain way too many charges. Took me out of business. When they first opened, I did $20,000 a month with them. Presently, fees are so high, I try to use free listing auctions now like GoodForge.com and some of the other freebies. Ebay lost my products for good!

I love ebay better, they have better customer support, better guidelines, better website, better buyer protection, people feel more secure to buy in EBAY, and seller NOW can list FREE at ANY price!!!
Ebay website has better interface and more user friendly, has more listing options, and is better promoted inline, as and well provides security for both seller and buyer, and ENFORCES it very well.

I paid almost $30 for Etsy showcases and other fees, and my store was closed without any notice and without any possibility to recover my listings...because my items do not look handmade.
I have violated some rules on Etsy last month, and can not re open my store even after I have fixed the problem. I sent picture of the process how I make my goods and ETSY support team have never replied to me..
Other stores with the same violation are still open though....

Great topic, and I like reading what others have experienced in this area. I would also be interested in a comparison of Etsy to Artfire.
