Flickr – Market Your Item Photos

After reviewing the basics of Flickr, here is how you can implement Flickr into your handmade shop’s marketing plan:

  1. Drop Your Shop Info.  There are several ways to drop your shop name while making sure to respect Flickr’s use policy.  Consider using your shop site as your Flickr screen name.  Because your screen name is be attached to every photo you upload, this can be a quick and easy way to drop your shop’s name.  You can also use the tags for the photos to tell viewers about your shop – from the city name to your selling platform (”Etsy”, “Artfire”, etc.)   As with all marketing, make sure to keep promoting to a minimum and focus on the site’s focus – in this case photography.
  2. Profile Basics.  As with other social networking profiles, make the most of this space on Flickr!  Take a look at our article about how to write winning social networking profiles for ideas.
  3. Stay Active. Comment on other photographs and videos to keep your user name at the forefront of the community.  Plus, you may come across some intriguing content on Flickr!
  4. Keep Craft-Focused.  Flickr is an ideal marketing tool for handmade sellers.  Upload your item photos to Flickr in addition to your handmade selling platform.  Unlike other businesses, photographs are a central part of selling handmade goods online, making it wasy to integrate Flickr with little additional effort.
  5. Join Groups.  Joining groups is vital to making the most of Flickr.  Make sure to share your photos in groups.  An easy way to find groups is to look by location – search for groups centered around your city and your state.
  6. Point To Flickr.  Make the most of your new Flickr account by linking from your website, shop site, and other social networking sites.  By linking, it gives potential buyers another way to view your item photos.  Moreover, you have more potential matches for search engine users.

Most importantly, you should use Flickr to draw users to your handmade shop, not trick them into stopping by.  There is no reason to spam other Flickr users.  Your great photograph should do all the work for you!

Lots of good ideas here, but I’ve learned that mentioning Etsy or Artfire in your descriptions can lead to your Flickr account being terminated without notice!

My understanding of it is that Flickr is for photographers. If one is using it as a selling venue, it’s basically *spam*. :(

Thanks fir the info, I am new to all of this and was getting close to addressing What’s Flicker all about. I don’t see how you can load a product image, have someone click on it, end up at your site and not get caught. Maybe you could show us with an example. Thanks,Nancy
