Handmade Shop Advertising – Google Adsense
When sellers first begin selling handmade items, many may be at a loss for how to advertise their items. The handmade industry is not alone. Internet advertising is developing at a ever-changing page, leaving behind those trying to keep up. As more and more potential buyers are connecting to the Internet to make purchases, a unique opportunity is emerging for handmade sellers. It is vital for business to learn about multiple avenues for effective advertising online.
According to a recent article, the web’s advertising revenue for the first half of 2006 reached $7.9 billion. The amount of advertising revenue coming from the Internet continues to exceed predictions. Growth is not only expected, but guaranteed.
There are many ways to advertise your handmade goods. Taking the lead from other industries, Google’s AdSense has become the most effective Internet advertising method. AdSense generates the most advertising revenue online and is a trusted platform for many advertisers. Google has reportedly earns a shocking $1 million per hour from AdSense.
Although many Internet users can attest to noticing pop-up or banner advertisements, a surprising number of users are relatively in the dark regarding Google advertising practices. Google Adsense adverts are displayed on the sidebar of search results performed on Google.com. In addition, website and blogs can incorporate AdSense ads into their static web pages.
There are two partners involved in Google Adsense advertising – the advertisers and the “real estate” owners, or website owners.
Those who choose to advertise with Google quickly realize this method of advertising is inexpensive and has the potential to be effective. The majority of your advertising work is done by Google. Gone are the days of designing an badge for promotion, or researching which websites would be the most effective for reaching your potential clients. In essence, Google will place your ad on a relevant website – the ad is created sans graphic designers and the websites are found without spending hours on your part.
Our team thinks the best part of Google advertisment is that handmade sellers only “pay per click”. This type of advertising, shortened to “PPC”, means Google will only deduct your ad dollars when a potential buyer clicks on your ad. Often times, handmade advertising options are limited. As a small business, it’s easy to get distracted by ad opportunities that may not help your shop in the long run. A seller will pay for their ad to be displayed on a website or blog and the “click through” rate is sometimes lost. “Pay per click” is a simple concept that Google has perfected in it’s Google Adsense – only pay for the times a potential customer clicks on the ad. If no one clicks, advertising dollars are not wasted.
Google Adsense is also great for blog or website owners. In recent years, Adsense has replaced affiliate banners as the advertising method of choice for website owners. Implementing Google ads to your website or blog is relatively easy to do. In addition, Google manages which ads appear on these sites, scanning for relevant content to ensure ads placed on the static web pages are of use to the Internet user. This method provides both value to the Internet user and one of the most effective and consistent sources of income for website owners.
Utilizing Google Adsense is simple. Just register for a free account, paste the provided code into your web page and then Google will provide ads from their list of over 100,000 advertisers. In regards to payment, merchants pay Google each time a user “clicks through”, meaning clicks on the ads on your website. As a result, the site owner receives a portion of the revenue generated from the advertiser who purchased the ad.
Remember, there are two sides to the Google Adsense coin: the advertiser and the “real estate”. Which side of the coin do you fall on?

I have to agree with you on this one, it is nearly always the case.
Crafters would do well to learn all they can before jumping in and advertising with Google Adwords. Google Adwords has lots of rules that affect your ad costs and you can really use for shirt (without getting any benefit at all) if you don’t know what you’re doing.
You need to be sure you know what targeted keywords will likely perform best for you and are most likely to lead to sales, and the best thing to do is to get targeted visitors to some kind of email capture page so you can contact them over and over again.
The general rule of thumb is that someone needs to come in contact with you and your website at LEAST 7-10 times before they trust you and like you enough to make a purchase.
Building that relationship without some kind of email followup is practically impossible. How many website do you go back to with being reminded?
What I like to do is offer something free but desirable to my targeted visitors so they will trust me enough to give me their email addresses.
The best thing to give is something that is so good you could charge money for it. On my how-to-make-jewelry website I give a free tutorial. On my HandmadeResults website I give away free reports and videos about marketing handmade jewelry online. The really valuable things are only accessible once someone registers on the site.
What do you offer? Only you can answer that (assuming you know your market! And if you don’t, you need to get to know them. What are they like? What do they want more than anything? What keeps them awake at night? How can you make an impression on them in a way that they would care about?)
Once you have their permission to email them, you can start building a long term preselling relationship – the only real way to build a business online in my opinion.
