Crafters would do well to learn all they can before jumping in and advertising with Google Adwords. Google Adwords has lots of rules that affect your ad costs and you can really use for shirt (without getting any benefit at all) if you don't know what you're doing.

You need to be sure you know what targeted keywords will likely perform best for you and are most likely to lead to sales, and the best thing to do is to get targeted visitors to some kind of email capture page so you can contact them over and over again.

The general rule of thumb is that someone needs to come in contact with you and your website at LEAST 7-10 times before they trust you and like you enough to make a purchase.

Building that relationship without some kind of email followup is practically impossible. How many website do you go back to with being reminded?

What I like to do is offer something free but desirable to my targeted visitors so they will trust me enough to give me their email addresses.

The best thing to give is something that is so good you could charge money for it. On my how-to-make-jewelry website I give a free tutorial. On my HandmadeResults website I give away free reports and videos about marketing handmade jewelry online. The really valuable things are only accessible once someone registers on the site.

What do you offer? Only you can answer that (assuming you know your market! And if you don't, you need to get to know them. What are they like? What do they want more than anything? What keeps them awake at night? How can you make an impression on them in a way that they would care about?)

Once you have their permission to email them, you can start building a long term preselling relationship - the only real way to build a business online in my opinion.
