Item Descriptions – Think Unique
It can be tempting to find a great way to write item descriptions and stick to the same format for every new item. However, in the word of search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc.) content is king and unique content will get your far – and fast!
When adding new items to your Etsy shop, consider switching it up!
Below are tips our team suggests to Etsy sellers looking to maximize the effect of their item description content on search engine ranking:
- Copy and Waste. Think you can just copy and paste your way into the #1 spot for those searching for “Etsy Baby Items”? Think again! Copying content to your item descriptions will not only not add to your ratings for content, the practice will actually hurt your shop. It surprises some Etsy sellers to know that using the same item descriptions for similar items is not a good idea.
- Keyword Searches. Take a look at what people are searching for in order to guide your item description writing. It is more important to utilize the keywords that are relevant to your item, than “write how you want.”A seller may like to call their necklaces “neck jewelry”, but that doesn’t help buyers find the item. Know what keywords are relevant to your Etsy shop’s items and be sure to sprinkle your descriptions with those words.
- Ok, Ok… Don’t Go Overboard. Just because you have found that “Etsy silver and blue jewelry” is a hot keyword (and just happens to fit your newest item) doesn’t mean you can write the keyword over and over on a page and expect good results. Our team suggests using the keyword every 40 or so words. Don’t overdo it – using a keyword too much in the item description will actually hurt your ranking.
- Keep It Real. No one wants to read something that sounds like an advertisement. Keep true to your craft and your passion by drawing potential buyers in, not luring them. At the end of the day, Etsy shoppers want to buy products based on a simple principle “Buy, Sell, and Live Handmade.” If they wanted to be outright sold a product, they would hit up Walmart.
It’s great to read SEO posts on Etsy Marketing – so many Etsy sellers don’t realise the importance of keywords. Great job!
