Expose Your Shop – The Sampler
Our team read about “The Sampler” in Etsy’s Storque and wanted to share this wonderful resource with Etsy shop owners.
Never heard of the Sampler? Here is some background on the website:
The Sampler, which can be found online at www.homeofthesampler.com is an easy way to market your Etsy show. Getting involved is easy… just send in at least 25 product samples. Yes, that’s it!
Every month, the staff over at the Sampler pack boxes with tons of samples and promo items to send to potential new customers for your shop. They are $30.00 per pack (shipped in the U.S.) and $10.00 per mini-sampler (shipped in the U.S.). But boxes aren’t just send to Sampler subscribers who purchase the boxes. Boxes will be sent to Sampler contributors and members of the Media all over the world!
Talk about a great advertising opportunity!
HandmadeMarketing.org reader Bri Lehman from The Craft Begins blog and four (yes, four!) Etsy shops says she’s a fan of the Sampler. “Though the Sampler is often maligned, I feel that it’s a good way to get word out about your Etsy shop,” Bri tell us.
“Since everything we do is handmade, it’s often difficult to appreciate the subtle complexities of your items without seeing them in person,” Bri says. “Sending something out through the Sampler gives your potential customers the chance to experience your item firsthand, examine your craftsmanship, and also, most importantly, wear it around for other people to ask about. Also, they have media contacts, and if you make enough friends/contribute enough stuff, you have the opportunity to send your items out to many members of the Media (including Martha herself!)“
Can’t go wrong with Martha getting your Etsy goodies!

Well thanks for publishing my contribution! if anyone has any questions, please feel free to email me directly and I’ll answer whatever I can!
Great info – can we send promotional items, like magnets, or is it geared only towards the hand-made (originals) in our shops?
You can send promos in addition to what you contribute. For instance, if your magnets have your shop name on them, they’re considered a “promo” and require an actual item contribution, but if they’re just magnets, then that can be sent in by itself.
They suggest sending something that doesn’t cost too much to make, but is representative of what you make. So, for instance, if you were a photographer, you could send in greeting cards as a sample instead of an actual 8×10. Just something to get people interested!
Very interesting idea and one that I’d like to look into trying out. Thanks!
Bri,
Do the 25 samples all have to be the same? I make cards but never make a huge quantity of the same card. So if I sent 5 of one design, 5 of another, etc. is that acceptable?
Thanks,
Jan
Yeah, that’s fine! I send in multiple designs all of the time.
