1000 Markets – Join a Market
1000 Markets is an online handmade marketplace where sellers can sell their products to potential buyers. The team at HandmadeMarketing.org was intrigued by the site’s use of “markets” to categorize items sold on the site, as well as create distinct communities wihtin the site. An interested viewer can browse the markets on 1000 Markets to see what interests them on the site.
Elena Mary Siff, a fan of 1000 Markets, has created three marketplaces on the site: Utterly Unique (for eccentric and outsider art, Steampunk Style (for work created with the steampunk aesthetic), and Charming (for jewelry designer who work with exotic and unusual charms) Elena says she is always looking for excellent artists working in these areas to include in these marketplaces.
Elena explains the idea of “marketplaces” a bit further. “Marketplaces can be developed by any seller on the site,” she said. “A marketplace manager creates a niche group and invites these sellers to join in a marketplace, which is very easy to do, one must find kindred spirits, establish market guidelines and have a great idea for an unique market. Matt, the CEO of 1000 Markets, really does envision 1000 Markets eventually.”
“Each marketplace has a market blog where different market members can be featured. We are all exploring where we can submit our market blogs right now to bring traffic to our marketplaces. For example one of my marketplaces features the Steampunk aesthetic so I am researching on Google what other blogs/websites feature teampunk art and craft and I will submit my Steampunk Style market blog to these sites in hopes to draw more traffic to our marketplace.”
Why sell on 1000 Markets? “1000 Markets is a very handsome site and the administration is very responsive,” Elena told HandmadeMarketing.org. “They listen to shop owners and market managers and acts on our suggestions. Amazon only is used for sales (no PayPal) and it is a seamless process with instant payment and many communications about a sale – clear and concise information.”
Elena also likes the look of the 1000 Markets site. “The site is juried so all the shops are full of excellent products and art with clear descriptions and professional looking photographs. There is a sense of community and trail blazing as the site is relatively new and we are all on the bandwagon of believing in this experiment of marketplaces,” she tells us.
Elena thinks the 1000 Markets site has a lot of potential, but does not think there is a great deal of traffic to the site yet. “Administration has just started to send out targeted emails to groups and buyers with very attractive advertising featuring specific marketplaces , especially right now around holidays like Mother’s Day.”
Elena thinks the site has a lot of handmade sales potential. “The 1000 Markets members are very enthused about the site and are excited about promoting it, as are the administrators.”
The consistent factor that draws many people to sell on 1000 Markets is that the site is actually quite beautiful. The 1000 Markets website is clean and professional, giving ArtFire and Etsy a run for their money.
“It is a very good looking site and easy to use,” Elena adds. “So far it is only open to buyers and sellers from the United States but they are working on having Amazon accept international sales soon. Anyone can come to the site and develop their own marketplace with relative ease and then promote their marketplace however they see fit.”
What’s next for 1000 Markets? “I think the administration has many new plans in development about promoting and advertising the entire site in the very near future,” Elena says.

Wonderful interview!!
1000Markets is really wonderful. Everything on there is of the highest quality. I think it will be a huge success as more people discover all the wonderful things to be found.
Elena Mary, you are so incredibly hardworking, vivacious and talented. Much respect in the way of your accomplishments.
I’ll never forget that you were the one who first directed me to 1000 Markets, where I now have several shops and am the manager of a market too!
Much Aloha!
As an artisan selling at 1000 Markets, I cannot say enough about what a fabulous venue it is.
You have complete control over how your shop looks, listing an item is incredibly easy and fast, editing an item doesn’t take it out of your shop, you can create collections to feature and list an item in more than one collection, and there’s even a user-friendly built in SEO optimizer in every listing. To say nothing of the fact that you get your own blog, and a wall for visitor comments.
But even if none of this existed, the markets create communities of kindred spirits, whether they’re built around an aesthetic, a technique, a set of beliefs, a location, or even a simple village of eclectic and diverse artisans. You are not one of a faceless million in a personality-free mall. You are part of something larger than that – this is truly a case of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts.
As a buyer, the process is completely seamless and integrated – and backed by Amazon’s A-to-Z Guarantee.
Am I a fan? Yes. That I most definitely am.
Great interview, Elena!
I000 Markets is my first online shopping venture and it couldn’t have been easier to set up. I’ve had some success with sales and a ton of views. I love the administration and my fellow merchants, and the best thing of all is that it’s free to set up as much product as you want with no upfront fees. I love Amazons’ guarantee and one step shopping as used by 1000 Markets. Thumbs up to all the markets too…it’s a novel concept and sure to catch buyers’ fancy!
What a great explanation of the 1000 Markets concept! I love 1KM, and was lucky to be the manager of one of the first merchant-run markets. It’s a great system where you can see items grouped by style, location, and type. It allows each market to have its own persona, which makes the whole process really exciting.
Aside from the whole market idea, the site is clean, fresh and well-juried, and the admin are incredibly responsive to the merchants there – not only in terms of communication, but more importantly, in actually modifying the site to meet the needs of buyers and sellers alike.
1000 Markets was not my first handmade online venue, but it is now my only online shop. Classy, smart, organized and beautiful, this site is a pleasure to navigate for both merchants and buyers. You’re invited to take a stroll through this innovative marketplace. I think you’ll find it addictive!
